Rising fuel and insurance costs force families to sell second cars

Feb 12, 2012 | by Stephen Murphy | No Comments »

A recent study undertaken by the tyre manufacturer Bridgestone has shown that one in six British families were forced to sell their second car in 2011 due to the ever increasing fuel and insurance costs.

The study found millions of Brits who are being impacted by the economic crisis in the UK have to look at new ways to slash their day to day living costs and it seemed that motor vehicles had to become the main focus of belt tightening.

Andy Dingley from Bridgestone UK, who commissioned research on 2,000 families said, ”Rising fuel prices mean that a large proportion of the family wage is spent purely on things like petrol, gas and electricity.

”But with prices increasing faster than the rate of people’s incomes, families are having to make extremely difficult decisions.

”The balancing act for a family nowadays does not leave much room for manoeuvers financially which can have a knock on effect on people’s peace of mind.

”This affects every part of people’s lives – including how and when they drive.”

The report which became available in January 2012 showed that mothers are feeling the pinch the most in regards to the high fuel and vehicle insurance costs and are forced to take some radical measures in order to decrease the family’s bills. Some of these varia

Repair Your Own Motorcycle? Is This Better Left to the Pros?

Feb 04, 2012 | by Stephen Murphy | No Comments »

While theyre not the first outfit to offer “Self-Repair” motorcycle shop services, seeing an article about got me thinking about the idea and the pros and cons of using such a service.

Motomethod, in Vancouver, BC, is open for business and offers individual riders the option of heading over there, reserving a lift, renting tools and machinery and doing their own fabrication or repair jobs with or without the supervision of an expert technician.

While it seems like a great idea and will surely help build up an active motorcycle community in the area around the shop, I cant help but worry for the guys running the show. The

Nebraska Bill would Increase Liability Requirements

Jan 29, 2012 | by Stephen Murphy | No Comments »

State Senator Paul Schumacher of Columbus, Nebraska is supporting a bill that would result in a higher liability insurance requirement for motorists in his state. He says this change in the financial responsibility requirements is necessary because the dollar isnt worth what it once was.

Specifically, Schumacher wants to raise the benefit for un/underinsured motorist policies from the existing $25,000 for individuals and $50,000 for when more than one person is injured to $50,000 and $100,000 respectively.

According to the senator, the existing benefit levels were determined many years ago, when the cost of medical care was much lower. Doubling the required coverage amount, he says, will only result in a relatively small increase in auto insurance premiums.

Insuring Famous Rides: The Series

Jan 15, 2012 | by Stephen Murphy | No Comments »

Last year, we launched our Insuring Famous Rides series, covering the curious costs and ridiculous risks involved in insuring everything from the world’s oldest car to a Winnebago-turned-spaceship. The series offers a tongue-in-cheek twist on the world of car insurance by tackling some of pop culture’s most famous — and in one case, most obscure — vehicles. (Though at times we’ve had to fudge a bit on just what a “car” is.)

Ever wonder what it would cost Bruce Wayne to insure the Batmobile? Or what would happen if Elvis were still alive (he’s not?) and wanted to insure his pink Caddy? Come on … you k

Williston, North Dakota isnt a town most people have heard of, but right now the city, which is the center of oil activity for the state, is getting some press because its seeing an increase in automobile accidents.

According to statistics shared by the local police, there were 131 vehicle accidents reported in October, 2011, almost twice as many as the previous years number of 78.

As well the estimated total vehicle damage was higher this year $483,000 last month as opposed to roughly $200,000 in October, 2010.

Why such a marked increase? Police Lt. Mark Bitz told the Williston Daily News that it was a result of a growing population and a greater amount of traffic.
