Study: High number of auto accidents caused by women

Women may be more likely to file auto insurance claims due to accidents than previously thought, as the number of female drivers involved in crashes is substantially higher than researchers at the University of Michigan initially believed, a new study shows.The study, conducted by UMs Transportation Research Institute, was based on 6.5 million car accidents reported between 1988 and 2007.

ND Oil Town Sees Increased Accidents

Williston, North Dakota isnt a town most people have heard of, but right now the city, which is the center of oil activity for the state, is getting some press because its seeing an increase in automobile accidents.

According to statistics shared by the local police, there were 131 vehicle accidents reported in October, 2011, almost twice as many as the previous years number of 78.

As well the estimated total vehicle damage was higher this year $483,000 last month as opposed to roughly $200,000 in October, 2010.

Why such a marked increase? Police Lt. Mark Bitz told the Williston Daily News that it was a result of a growing population and a greater amount of traffic.

It will be interesting to see if auto insurance rates also increase in Williston as a result.

Driving a hire car in winter can be a nerve-wracking experience, particularly when a simple scratch could leave you open to hundreds of pounds in charges.  The last couple of winters have been bleak across Europe, so if you’re planning on renting a car in the winter months it pays to be prepared.

We have compiled our 10 top tips for driving a hire car in icy and snowy conditions:

1.       Check whether the car you want to hire has winter tyres?  You may have to pay extra for these.

 

2.       If you’re planning to drive on snowy mountain roads, it’s probably worth renting a snow chain. Contact your rental company in advance to pre-book these as they may not have enough to go around on pick-up.

3.       In bad conditions drive slowly, smoothly and maintain a larger-than-usual distance from the vehicle ahead
